Week 4
Literacy
This week we have been consolidating the group of sounds: j, ai, oa, ee and or. These are quite tricky ones so remember so please keep practising them at home. We had lots of fun in class being sounds detectives and going on a sound hunt – we had look for the sounds and then read the ones that we saw.

We have also been working hard at using our phonics knowledge to blend sounds together to read words.
I was very impressed during our reading comprehension session this week. The children demonstrated good understanding of their books by retelling them and then completed a written follow up task.
We continued to work on our text Cecil the Spider and this week created a Story Map as a class

We then used this to help us retell the story.
To help us make our writing more interesting we focussed on different words for said this week. We had lots of fun coming up with ideas including; screamed, squeaked, whispered, asked, shouted and roared! We also had a think about different time connectives and made up a tool box with some examples. These included ; next, after that, the second time, the third time, the last time and eventually. The children participated very well during these activities π
On Friday we had a go at writing a sentence independently. We had to include a describing word for Cecil and remember a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. A lot to remember but no problem for us! I was delighted with the standard of all the writing and can’t wait to get some up on display on our new writing wall. πβοΈππ
Numeracy
This week we started to look at multiplication, we have been talking about sharing, making equal groups, pairs and skip counting in 2s.

Here we are sharing objects into equal groups.
Socks
Your child may have asked if they can take a pair of old socks to school….this is for a number display we plan to make. So if you have any unwanted socks please send them in. They will be returned. πππ§¦π§¦
Topic
As part of our Science topic related to Space we have been learning about day and night. We talked about the difference between day and night, the presence of the sun, what we can see at these times and what activities we do. We used some pictures to do a sorting activity and made some day and night artwork. βοΈπππ

Yoga
This week we were mastering the spider pose to be like Cecil! Not easy but we gave it our best shot! π§ββοΈπ§πΌββοΈπ·

Lunar New Year
Following our learning about Chinese New Year C took in some fantastic things from home to show us and a selection photos to look at. Thank you for sharing this π

Chinese dragons
The children demonstrated being confident individuals today whilst showing off their fantastic Chinese dragons to the whole school during assembly!

πStar Awardπ
Well done Adie for receiving P1 star award today. For her determination and hard work! Excellent writing today, well done πππ

Word walls
The children are being introduced to some tricky/common words in class. Today they brought home a letter (see below) explaining this, along with their own ‘word wall’. This should be kept in homework bags and brought to school each day. These words can be practised at home by reading and/or writing them regularly. Our new word today is he. π

Week 3
We regularly take time for reading for enjoyment in P1. The children have an opportunity to choose a book and read independently or to share a book with a friend to develop literacy and social skills. They all look so engaged and relaxed during these sessions.

Our topic work was focussed around Chinese New Year this week. We learnt the story of why the years are named after animals and had a go at acting out the story ourselves.

We had a go at writing our names in Chinese writing as well as some craft activities making Chinese lanterns and dragons. The children were very focussed and impressed me with their independence and creativity.

On Wednesday for gym we continued with gymnastics and focussed on our balancing skills as well as jumping and landing and rolling.

In Literacy we are working on a text call ‘Cecil is a Spider’. We have been learning the text and retelling it using actions and puppets. We have started to make a ‘tool box’ to help us make the text more interesting. This week we came up with lots of describing words for Cecil – we came up with lots of different words including big, furry, friendly, black and big-eyed!

Here we are retelling and acting out the story. Why not see if we can tell you the story at home?
On Friday we got very creative and had a go at creating our own Chinese dragons! We displayed excellent teamwork and had lots of fun!

In the afternoon we enjoyed a Chinese banquet and tried some different foods including noodles, spring rolls and prawn crackers. A great end to another super week! ππ

πStar Awardπ
Well done to our πStar of the Weekπfor being brave and excellent team work! πππ
Week 2 round up!
We have now settled back into the school routine and had a super week in P1. Here is a round up of what we have been up!
We were introduced to another two new sounds and the children continue to work hard at learning to hear, say and write these. It was the digraphs ai and oa this week.
We were being highlighting detectives for the story ‘Oakley the Toad’.

Here we are drawing words with ie in them and writing the sound.

We have enjoyed getting back into our reading routine and getting new books in our groups. New books are allocated to bug club accounts on Mondays. Keep up with all the practising at home as this really helps with reading skills.
This week our mini topic was water and ice. We investigated floating and sinking and were developing our prediction, observation and recording skills.

Some of us had a go at trying to make a boat that floats….this involved planning, creativity and problem solving! We had a few successful attempts! ππ

We also looked at the 3 different states of water and discussed where we found these in our everyday lives. We boiled a kettle which led us on to talking about the difference between steam and smoke.

The children were given a challenge of working in teams to melt ice cubes as quickly as they could. They came up with the ideas of breaking it up, holding it in their hands to warm it up, blowing on it, putting it in hot water and placing it near a radiator as well as in sunlight! What fantastic thinking and teamwork!

We finished off by taking on the role of mini scientists and having a go at making our own ice cream without using a freezer! Why not ask us to tell you how we made it? There was lots of shaking involved! I’m delighted to say it was a success and apparently it tasted pretty good too! π¦ππ

To end our water and ice week we enjoyed a bit of chill out time with some Frozen Yoga!! π

On Thursday we were lucky to get a visit from Andy from Jammin Fitness. He started off with an assembly about keeping healthy and active with links to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. After the assembly we had a fitness session with lots of dancing and stretching! This was full of energy and lots of fun!

In French this week were learning colours. We played ‘pass the parcel’ and ‘colour corners’ to practise. So now you know what we’re talking about if you hear us say bleu, jaune, vert or rouge….!

In Gym this term we are going to be doing gymnastics. This week we played a fun game of ladders to warm up and then explored different ways of traveling along a bench. Some fantastic ideas here, requiring lots of concentration and balance. We will be building on this next week developing our balancing skills and exploring movement.

If you heard us mention Kapla, Jenga or Jumanji then this is what we were talking about……..

This is KAPLA, a fantastic new resource which we will be sharing with P1/2. The children created some super models developing their creativity, fine motor skills, problem solving, critical thinking and team skills. I can’t wait to see some more creations…….
In Maths we are continuing to work with money. We set up a shop in our role play area and are becoming more confident at recognising and ordering coins.
Phew, a busy week in P1! ππ
πStar of the Weekπ
Another very well deserved star award this week in P1. Well done Rowan for your teamwork and determination this week! ππ Great work!
